What are the initial steps on having my ideas protected?

I have an idea I plan on launching once I receive my masters degree. I have been having difficulty figuring out pricing due to the fact that I cannot find examples of my idea anywhere; therefore, I thought I should contact your service. In a nutshell, I want to provide clients 24 hour access to chemical dependency professionals via text, email, or telephone. I want to charge a monthly fee for this service. What differentiates this service from others is that it is available to the client as needed, any time of the day or night. The only similar service I have found is where clients log on for group substance abuse therapy a few times per week at a set time.

I am having trouble seeing in your brief description any patentable invention. A patentable invention is an article, device, method of making or providing a useful result, which is new and non-obvious. You should contact a patent attorney to talk through more of the details, in case those are important to a patentable invention determination.

It sounds like you are developing a valuable service. I wish you luck. Note that our intellectual property laws do not protect mere ideas. You have to have something original, tangible and "non-obvious". There are no short cuts here. Your best bet is to retain Intellectual Property counsel to guide you. Note that before sharing your ideas with anyone other than counsel you should require that the persons to whom you make disclosure enter into a non-disclosure agreement.
