How can you check the status of a patent?

I found a patent pending for an idea that is essentially the same as one of my own. However, I cannot find whether or not it has been approved or whether there is continued research. What is the easiest way for me to determine this information?

By hiring a patent agent or patent attorney to do a proper search. Private parties seldom have the training and expertise to do so.
